The Sistem51 movement is developed by ETA and has an excellent power reserve and acceptable accuracy. The Sistem51 movement has a maintenance-free service life of 20 years and it is actually BTW (Because a lot of people get this wrong) 100% Servicable The watch case is not made of plastic but of a combination of ceramic and resin which makes the case very robust. It is not plastic at all. Standard spring bars are not used because they are also not used in the Fifty Fathoms (just like the O ring which is 100% identical to the one found on the fifty fathoms steel/metal) You can and also should consider diving in it as it was tested to EXACTLY the same specifications as the metal one

I think these are a great design. I'm not sure if it's quite up to the size I prefer, but it's pretty close. I would like to try one on at some point. I think they absolutely nailed the aesthetics. I literally have no complaints. The black and tan with the reddish orange seconds hand is a great combination. I think the blue one looks great as well. I've seen these available at a discount, so you're definitely not paying full price. Can you get some homage Chinese brand for cheaper? Sure, but you're likely not getting much in the way of original design for this style of watch. Although Seiko has definitely moved up in their pricing in the Prospex line (see 62MAS from 2017 vs. 2020 vs. 2024), but they are also upgrading things in the process. This watch is certainly upgraded from the old models with the movement and sounds like the bracelet and such too. Once you realize that Seiko has done a lot of cleaning up of the gray market (as Marc from Long Island Watches has mentioned), you realize that it's not a dramatic leap in price, accounting for inflation. Those <$100 watches on Amazon certainly weren't close to their list price. I think it's a combination of Seiko improving the build (added cost), just trying to increase the price, cutting down on the gray market, and accounting for inflation that looks like a huge jump to people. As was mentioned in a recent This Watch Life podcast, people tend to get prices of watches stuck in their minds when they enter the hobby. A Speedmaster is ~$4K when you enter? Wow, $7K seems like a huge jump and what those are worth. $6K when you entered? Maybe not such a huge jump. Same thing goes for the cheap Seikos. I'll use the 2020 Prospex Alpinist re-issue as an example. Everybody was used to $400 SARB Alpinists, but the list price was much higher. If you look at the $700+ 2020 pricing, it was exactly in line with inflation. Spot on in fact, yet it theoretically was also upgraded with AR coating and a longer lasting movement (better is debatable). If you waited a bit, you could get those on sale at ADs, or just ask for a discount.

Non tapering runner strap and unidirectional bezel really aims this well with the 200 m at divers. Not sure about doubling the 60 minutes markers truly.

Just ordered one for $1050. Super excited for it. Always wanted a lunar pilot, this was a no brainer purchase.

I really want to buy one as it’s on sale and I use military time at my job so it feels like it would be a great tool watch with style. My only issue is people keep saying the strap is not made for smaller wrists ? I have a 7 inch wrist I’d imagine atleast on the last whole I should be fine right 😅?! San martin builds great watches. It's just a fact that they build amazing watches. I've handled a bunch of mid tier swiss brands, and the build quality is comparable or slightly better in areas. It doesn't mean they are "better" or should be all you buy, but they are very good. They should be respected in the community.

That sticker for the bezel scale screams cheaply made trinket. Not sure why they even bothered to make the battery replaceable as most of them are going into the landfill really early.

Whew….sorry Chris but this watch is SO not, beautiful or gorgeous. No wonder they do 99% of their production as homages. Fine review and I applaud them for trying but compliance with the the National Chinese Society for the Color Blind is extremely stringent. Even so……. Maybe in the year of the Snake! It's Chinese state subsidised so no thank you. Same with Atelier Wen, also state sponsored. Without the state they couldn't exist. I see it as a form of propaganda.

The only component that is not on par with Zodiac is the movement. NH is a shitter; Zodiac at least uses a swiss movement. But for the price I can not argue about anything else. We should all keep in mind that if you put this watch through a rugged daily routine it might not hold up as well as a more expensive watch. There is no long term history on these watches that are pumped out by the thousands.

These look awesome. Reminds me a little of the glasshute seventies, but definitely it’s own thing for sure…..I don’t buy a lot of watches, cause I know the next exciting watch will be out soon enough and then I will want that watch. This may be one of the few where I step off the merry go round

Too colourful for me. But i can still appreciate it. I have a few San Martins in my collection. They sit in the watch box next to my JLC, and i don't feel weird about it at all.

I couldn't agree more about the bracelet. Crazy as it sounds I was tempted to buy the watch (that I'm not particularly interested in) just to get the bracelet. And for those who may say why don't you just order the bracelet from San Martin. I looked into it and at this time they are only offering this bracelet with a curved end link (not the straight end link like the bracelet that is supplied with the watch).

The black tie version is killer. Might have to get one of these down the road. Met Peter at a Watch Time event in DC earlier this year. Very nice guy.

Zodiac has inferior quality compared to SM? Can you elaborate? What criteria are you using to make the claim? You mention the bezel is better on the SM. Maybe but the dial on the SM looks average at best.

SM make great watches. This one is perhaps to colorful for me but beautiful none the less. I would like to see them make a thin GADA (sub 11 mm) but they will have to ditch the NH series of movements for something thinner. Great review.

San Martin makes decent quality watches. It is just Zodiac being low quality and unreliable.

But no contest on the movement, my ssw stp movement holds +1 6 pos avg. Wish SM would wake up and smell the high beat.

SM are better build quality watches than others far more expensive,SM are great value for money.

You should check out their new SN0129 3 hander with the sand dune dial. Incredible watch for around $220. Blows away seiko and orient watches by a mile.

A lot of these reviewers make me laugh and it's a little bit annoying because they just refuse to give full credit to some of these watches people have complained about SanMartin and and now they make their own original design and these guys still can't say that its original they say Well it kind of reminds me of blah blah blah this watch Doesn't Remind anyone of anything. Divers have existed forever just because you make a diver doesn't mean it's inspired by anything this is 100% original and just because zodiac uses weird colors doesn't mean they own the right to do that. And in terms of quality same thing just give people their actual credit. SanMartin and have quality that is very good and not only in their price segments. Their quality is good in general and just as good as many watches costing a lot more including zodiac I would like proof that zodiac is better than this in any way

I avoid Chinese watches as a rule, but I might get this for summer. If the bezel markers were fully lumed, I definitely would! I have another San Martin Clone of a Unimatic and it's arguably better than the original! 😮

Problem is, it's a Chinese knockoff with a $20 movement, not a Swiss Zodiac. Other than that, great watch. 🙄 And I see that you're wearing an Omega, not a San Martin 😅

SM is really stepping it up, this model is original, they only has to change colours/materials on the dial and bezel and keep the case and bracelet, just refining it.. Quality wise they are already home.. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
